Hi all,

So sorry to hear about the passing of my friend Peter Sammy.

Peter and I started Abbey the same year.

Peter’s kindness and friendship will always be treasured memories.

We went to Holland together with the scout troop, lots of fun memories there as well, his passion for music, is something I always admired.

Condolences to his family, may the good lord give his family the strength to move on.

Rest In Peace

Toddy

Hey Ladislao,

Peter Sammy and I were very close, and out of school whenever I was home on weekends we would be hanging out or just going to eat KFC.

We were so close that when I was graduating he offered to drop me to the graduation up the hill and pick me up after and against the wishes of my father I accepted his offer and he did it.  That's how generous he was. Sometimes on weekends he would come to where I lived in Valsyn and we would go to the park and play cricket or soccer.

We would spend hours discussing various History topics we had to get done or debate the pro's and con's of the direction the country was going.

He was so smart his knowledge was so vast that sometimes I believe in class he just stayed quiet or pretend not to know just to be one of the guys, or as we say to be accepted as one of the guys, he was too smart for his time and I used to always tell him that.

One of the things I always remembered about Peter, he hated to say good bye, it was always "see you later" and I picked that up from him ,and up to today I never say good bye always see you later.

Peter, you will be missed terribly and, my friend, "see you later"

To his family, please accept my humblest condolence.

Just a few words about our friend Peter Sammy (1960-2020).

Peter went to the Mount from 1972-77.

We were in the same class.

He was a bright kid.

In the first term of Form I he came 1st in the class.

Through the 5 years he probably placed in the top 3-5 overall every term.

We were quite close in our early years and I think he was the one who encouraged me to join the scouts.

He was really into music, very interested in martial arts, and had an unusual (for that age) interest in social justice, equality etc.

By Form IV he was quoting Chairman Mao in class (much to the delight and encouragement of Bro Vincent!).

He definitely was a favourite among the teachers.

He was a prefect and I cannot recall any occasion on which he got into trouble or was rude to any of the teachers.

He lived on the UWI campus.

His father was Professor George Moon Sammy (also a major scouting figure).

I knew his father as well.

After MSB, Peter went to John Donaldson, and after that he was one of the few boys in our year at MSB who went to UWI where he studied electrical engineering up to master’s level.

He eventually opened his own company- Design Engineering Services Ltd which is today a major electrical engineering company here.

When he first started DESL, I was working at Johnson & Johnson Medical and I hired his company to do the maintenance on our operating room equipment.

He was an outstanding professional and an amazing engineer.

He married his high-school sweetheart– those who knew him well would recall that he had her name written all over his book bag and his books.

They had 4 children.

He was really proud of them.

In the last few years, I saw him occasionally.

I know that he was very interested and involved in the MSB group.

He once explained to me that this group could one day be the last hope for some MSB old boy in despair.

He was moved to become active in the group when one of our alumni passed away having suffered depression and addiction.

Now that I am reflecting and writing these few lines, it occurs to me that Peter embodied many of the characteristics that the school had in mind as the kind of adult that our teachers were trying to produce: well rounded, professional, unassuming, family-oriented, productive, socially conscious, etc.

Indeed, I can still recall the likes of Mr Seales, Fr Morris, or Bro Vincent asking us to imagine ourselves as adults and going on to describe the likes of someone like the adult that Sammy eventually grew up to become.

The last time I saw him was in March of this year.

We had a preliminary conversation about having a reunion for our class of 72-77 for the 45th anniversary of leaving school.

Never in my wildest did I think that this would be the last time that I was seeing this man.

RIP Peter you made the world a better place during your time here.

If anyone has any other memories- please share them.

In the first photo- that is Peter Sammy and I in the front row Form 1: 1972.

In the second photo we are in the same spot- Front row but on the right, 36 years later

Peter Gardiner

Condolences to his family! Good soldier!

Neil, morning.  I remember Sheldon Gomes playing football with the football team at Mount and he was running circles around the young men. He was very athletic great energy.

It was either him or his brother played Cricket for the west indies for short term.

You have a great day, Neil.

Neil Charles

Yes, Richard, his brother Larry played for The West Indies and he played on The Trinidad team, he was also a good footballer.

Circular No 985

Newsletter for alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.

Caracas, 19 of September 2020 No. 985

Dear Friends,

Here is news on Alan Harris, Anthony Chankar, and Adolfo Aumaitre.

-------------------------------------------

Frances-Anne Harris

Today we celebrate 25 years of marriage. Of ups and downs, of laughter and tears, of joys and sorrows, of fire and ice, of health and sickness, of strength and weakness, of feelings of love and feelings of disappointment but through it all LOVE has held us together. Thanks be to God for blessing us and showing us that living life together is fun, full of adventure and endless emotional roller coasters but in the end, LOVE can conquer all. Here’s to living another 25 more years of LOVE!

--------------------

So I had a great trip out west in Alberta with my sweetheart. I have too many pictures to post, so please go to my facebook page. The photos was taken on the Columbia Ice fields, it looked hazy, but on that day ironically enough, the sky was covered with smoke from the fires in California (global warming), where I stood, the glacier was that very spot in 2009.. global warming, it’s retreating about 2000 yards ever 10 years.. so I built an “Inukshuk” in this case to oversee the visitors and to keep an eye on the glacier and just maybe to slow global warming.

Hi Ladislao,

If you are OK with it, please include this request in a future Circular.

Dear Abbey School Brothers in Christ

You can email me to request the current version of our alumni database; 1944 to 1986.

It also includes the monks, seminarians and lay teachers that were there at the respective times.

Please look over your personal information and update it as necessary…send it to me at amickiew@att.net.

In advance, thank you very much for your valued input and response.

Please be extra careful and stay healthy, safe and sound,

George Mickiewicz (AS-MSB 1956-1962)

Taken from the chats by Adolfo Aumaitre, leader of the donations here in Venezuela.

2/18/20 11:34 - Aumaitre Adolfo: This email was sent by our old boys in the USA who help send the humanitarian aid that reaches you monthly.

Read it with entertainment and send me your answers to what they ask and your suggestions for me, send them your answers, it does not matter if they are in Spanish

2/18/20 11:34 - Aumaitre Adolfo:

Thank you very much, Adolfo.

I cannot even start to imagine your and the other alums personal and family suffering as I read your note.

My heart and soul break every day as I follow the news in Venezuela.

The situation worsens by the day with no end in sight as the Cubans, Russians, Chinese, Iranians, etc. continue to prop up the Maduro government.

I suspected that those outside Caracas might not be able to get the money via Western Union which you confirmed in your note.

Following up on your note, please let me know:

What manner of transfer in May (per your second note) do you recommend for the $$ to those areas where you and the non-Caracas boys live?

Due to the increase in the cost of food, goods, protein, etc. – what is the approximate amount that the alums need in USA $ per month to get the necessary items if available?

Are there any NGOs or other Christian operations serving your area that we can use to send powder proteins, medicines and other needed but non-available items?

Any other ideas that you all may have to get you the needed assistance will be greatly appreciated.

I feel very helpless in trying to help and solve the terrible situation that you are all in.

I pray for you all and Venezuela every day asking Jesus to bring peace and end the suffering.

I am very, very proud and grateful of what you have personally done over the years in your boat trips to Trinidad in leading the assistance effort with courage, perseverance and love.

Un fuerte abrazo,

Jorge

2/18/20 12:22 PM - Aumaitre Adolfo: Let it be an impartial solution that benefits us all equally remember that many of us live in areas where there is no Italchange, western Union or international zoom

1/7/20 18:41 - Aumaitre Adolfo: Good afternoon brother Ladislao, I need to send me the data to make the transfer, please, Bank, account number and identification number, thank you

1/7/20 19:49 - Aumaitre Adolfo: Ladislao, I have been calling you but the call does not drop

1/7/20 20:00 - Aumaitre Adolfo: Thank you brother Ladislao, the calls do not go out, I do not know what is happening every day we are more isolated if it were not for WhatsApp

1/7/20 20:11 - Ladislao Kertesz: The internet is bad since Sunday

1/7/20 20:18 - Aumaitre Adolfo: Everything is wrong, I don't know how far this government is going to take us, it is ending everything

3/7/20 15:14 - Aumaitre Adolfo: Hello brother Ladislao, please confirm if you received the transfer

3/7/20 15:34 - Ladislao Kertesz: I have a recorded transfer of ten million, which would be like 50usd today

3/7/20 15:35 - Aumaitre Adolfo: It is the transfer that the company sent you, thank you for confirming the receipt, greetings

3/7/20 15:36 - Ladislao Kertesz: Greetings Adolfo, good job

3/7/20 15:36 - Aumaitre Adolfo: Thank you brother

7/6/20 09:10 - Ladislao Kertesz: Hello Adolfo, I am about to release a new circular.

Can you write about a Gascón?

Who lives in Brazil?

Since it does not appear in the list

Greetings

7/6/20 09:37 - Aumaitre Adolfo: Mario Gascón, entered Mount 1966-1971, he is from Puerto Ordaz, his family lived in an area called Villa Colombia, he was working at the Barcelona airport and he retired 4 years ago, last year he went to Brazil, I have not heard from him since then.

7/6/20 09:46 - Ladislao Kertesz: Ok I found him, what was the year and class when he left mount? Form III ???

What class did you study in?

With you?

6/7/20 09:51 - Aumaitre Adolfo: From Form I, he was a boy scout, he left in Form IV

7/6/20 09:54 - Aumaitre Adolfo: because at that time they gave the opportunity to do equivalent studies here in Venezuela through the Andrés Bello agreement to the Venezuelans who were at Mount and many came and were studying Form III and Form IV

7/6/20 10:00 - Ladislao Kertesz: Ok good story for the circular.

7/6/20 10:00 - Ladislao Kertesz: And were you in that group?

Did you came back before the GCE?

6/7/20 10:06 – Aumaitre Adolfo: Yes, I was, but my dad refused to let me come back unfinished.

At that time from 68-69 we had a professor sent by the Venezuelan Embassy to teach us about the subjects that were not seen in Mount and that were needed for our studies to be recognized through the Andrés Bello agreement: Moral y Cívica, Historia de Venezuela, Geography of Venezuela, Economic Geography among others.

7/6/20 10:09 - Aumaitre Adolfo: you were never told you this?,

the Cantores brothers, Santiago Robleda, Roberto Mezzana, Miguel Luongo, the Malave brothers, among others, received classes

7/6/20 10:48 - Aumaitre Adolfo: I am sending you a copy of the study certificate in Spanish that was given to us there in Mount to be delivered to the Ministry of Education in Venezuela to benefit from the Andrés Bello validation and revalidation agreement.

What is underlined in yellow are the subjects given to us by the teacher sent by the Venezuelan Embassy in TT

7/6/20 10:49 - Aumaitre Adolfo: It is not appreciated much due to the age they have

7/6/20 10:55 - Aumaitre Adolfo: And when you came back you arrived here in Venezuela, the Ministry gave you equivalency in the subjects underlined in yellow and you had to present a revalidation in the others here in Caracas.

I did a high school revalidation a few years later because from TT I went to the USA and then to Spain to study medicine,

When I returned I had to revalidate high school and then my medical degree so I did a high school revalidation in 76 to return to Venezuela had to do only the revalidation of my medical career

7/6/20 10:57 - Aumaitre Adolfo: You can publish that in the circular if it is to your liking

7/6/20 11:21 - Ladislao Kertesz: Same in my case but I only did GCE and from there to the USA for university and then to work.

There was an operation at the UCV and 60 engineers did the revalidation in three weeks 1969

6/7/20 12:12 - Aumaitre Adolfo: Well, I did the medicine test in 6 months

10/1/20 13:35 - Aumaitre Adolfo: Good afternoon dear brothers, the writing that you will read next to this, is sent by George and his team, they need that each of you as soon as possible I sent you the answer in the format that he asks for.

The money runs out in December and if you want them to raise more money and extend shipping for longer, please send your responses as soon as possible.

I have noticed that very few connect to the group and not even communicate to George or me the receipt of the monthly transfer, it is appreciated that please send your answers or this help will be definitively finished for you not to take a few minutes to demonstrate your interest, is it that they no longer need the help?

10/1/20 13:35 - Aumaitre Adolfo:

Dear Brothers in Christ,

I need your voluntary help, but in part it is mandatory to continue enjoying the monthly benefit.

I am not sure when our Trinidad brothers and sisters will be available to start their fundraising campaign for you due to the challenges you are facing with the Covid 19 pandemic.

Our current Team George funds will run out in December. In order to continue helping you in 2021, I need to try to expand Team George's membership from the current 14 members to at least double or triple that number. I've been praying and thinking about the best way to do it.

In the US, we have 2 festive and special seasons coming up soon where people open their hearts and share their treasures with each other ... Thanksgiving in November ... and .... Christmas.

The following came to mind ...... Share an application in October with about 100 of my family and friends to whom you will communicate what the $ 50 / month means for you and your families today ... . specifically what you are able to have / get / use / etc. today that otherwise would not be able to have (food, medicine, health, gasoline, basic needs, etc.).

It is strictly voluntary and feel free not to participate ..... I am not trying to pressure you in any way or form but if it is not done this far the monthly aid will come.

If they are willing to help. Please send me the information in this format:

Name.....

City where you live.....

What the $ 50 / month means to you and your families today .....

Specifically what you are able to have / get / use / etc. today that otherwise you would not be able to currently obtain in Venezuela (food, medicine, health, gasoline, basic needs, etc.). In detail the specific benefits that you obtain with the monthly contribution for you and your family ...

Finally, I hope you understand what I am trying to do in good faith so that I can continue to help you.

Thank you… and God bless you and yours.

A hug,

Your brother in Christ

Jorge.
