Hi all,

So sorry to hear about the passing of my friend Peter Sammy.

Peter and I started Abbey the same year.

Peter’s kindness and friendship will always be treasured memories.

We went to Holland together with the scout troop, lots of fun memories there as well, his passion for music, is something I always admired.

Condolences to his family, may the good lord give his family the strength to move on.

Rest In Peace

Toddy

Hey Ladislao,

Peter Sammy and I were very close, and out of school whenever I was home on weekends we would be hanging out or just going to eat KFC.

We were so close that when I was graduating he offered to drop me to the graduation up the hill and pick me up after and against the wishes of my father I accepted his offer and he did it.  That's how generous he was. Sometimes on weekends he would come to where I lived in Valsyn and we would go to the park and play cricket or soccer.

We would spend hours discussing various History topics we had to get done or debate the pro's and con's of the direction the country was going.

He was so smart his knowledge was so vast that sometimes I believe in class he just stayed quiet or pretend not to know just to be one of the guys, or as we say to be accepted as one of the guys, he was too smart for his time and I used to always tell him that.

One of the things I always remembered about Peter, he hated to say good bye, it was always "see you later" and I picked that up from him ,and up to today I never say good bye always see you later.

Peter, you will be missed terribly and, my friend, "see you later"

To his family, please accept my humblest condolence.

Just a few words about our friend Peter Sammy (1960-2020).

Peter went to the Mount from 1972-77.

We were in the same class.

He was a bright kid.

In the first term of Form I he came 1st in the class.

Through the 5 years he probably placed in the top 3-5 overall every term.

We were quite close in our early years and I think he was the one who encouraged me to join the scouts.

He was really into music, very interested in martial arts, and had an unusual (for that age) interest in social justice, equality etc.

By Form IV he was quoting Chairman Mao in class (much to the delight and encouragement of Bro Vincent!).

He definitely was a favourite among the teachers.

He was a prefect and I cannot recall any occasion on which he got into trouble or was rude to any of the teachers.

He lived on the UWI campus.

His father was Professor George Moon Sammy (also a major scouting figure).

I knew his father as well.

After MSB, Peter went to John Donaldson, and after that he was one of the few boys in our year at MSB who went to UWI where he studied electrical engineering up to master’s level.

He eventually opened his own company- Design Engineering Services Ltd which is today a major electrical engineering company here.

When he first started DESL, I was working at Johnson & Johnson Medical and I hired his company to do the maintenance on our operating room equipment.

He was an outstanding professional and an amazing engineer.

He married his high-school sweetheart– those who knew him well would recall that he had her name written all over his book bag and his books.

They had 4 children.

He was really proud of them.

In the last few years, I saw him occasionally.

I know that he was very interested and involved in the MSB group.

He once explained to me that this group could one day be the last hope for some MSB old boy in despair.

He was moved to become active in the group when one of our alumni passed away having suffered depression and addiction.

Now that I am reflecting and writing these few lines, it occurs to me that Peter embodied many of the characteristics that the school had in mind as the kind of adult that our teachers were trying to produce: well rounded, professional, unassuming, family-oriented, productive, socially conscious, etc.

Indeed, I can still recall the likes of Mr Seales, Fr Morris, or Bro Vincent asking us to imagine ourselves as adults and going on to describe the likes of someone like the adult that Sammy eventually grew up to become.

The last time I saw him was in March of this year.

We had a preliminary conversation about having a reunion for our class of 72-77 for the 45th anniversary of leaving school.

Never in my wildest did I think that this would be the last time that I was seeing this man.

RIP Peter you made the world a better place during your time here.

If anyone has any other memories- please share them.

In the second photo we are in the same spot- Front row but on the right, 36 years later

Neil, morning.  I remember Sheldon Gomes playing football with the football team at Mount and he was running circles around the young men. He was very athletic great energy.

It was either him or his brother played Cricket for the west indies for short term.

You have a great day, Neil.

Neil Charles

Yes, Richard, his brother Larry played for The West Indies and he played on The Trinidad team, he was also a good footballer.
